Information for Departing Students
E-mail
Your Providence College e-mail account will expire at the end of the summer after you graduate. It is recommended that you create a new email account to use after this occurs. Google, Yahoo, and Hotmail offer free web-based email, and most Internet Service Providers offer a number of email accounts to their customers. To make the transition easier, you have a few options. You can setup e-mail forwarding. This will send any emails sent to your Providence College account to any account you specify. You can setup the Out of Office Assitant. This sends a message into which you can insert your new email address. Unfortunately, you cannot use both of these together. Regardless of which one you choose, you should personally inform all your contacts of your e-mail address change.
Also, any e-mail that is still saved on your Providence College e-mail account will not be automatically forwarded. You will need to manually forward any messages you wish to keep to your new e-mail address. If you use an e-mail client (such as Outlook or Eudora), your email should already be saved to your computer.
Anti-virus Software
If you have McAfee VirusScan installed on your computer, you do not need to remove it. This software will never expire and will continue to update itself with virus definitions to help keep your computer protected from viruses. If you choose to purchase your own anti-virus software, you should uninstall McAfee VirusScan from your computer as it will conflict with other anti-virus software and cause your computer to run more slowly.
In addition to VirusScan, some students also had the McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator Agent installed onto their computer. While McAfee VirusScan is set up to routinely check for updates, the EPO Agent allowed the IT Department to push VirusScan updates to on-campus computers in the event of a virus emergency. If you want the EPO Agent removed from your computer, you can download the EPO Agent removal tool. A machine that is running the EPO Agent will have an icon in the system tray that resembles a blue and grey shield with a black silhouette of a man in front of it.
Network Storage
You should backup any information you have saved to your network drive (or G: drive). You can do this from the labs by logging into the computers using your own username and password and save your files to a CD-R, uploading them to a Box.net account, or e-mailing them to yourself if they are not too large. If you plan on e-mailing any files to yourself, please use an account other than your Providence College account (such as Hotmail, Yahoo, or Gmail), as your Providence College account can only hold 100 MB of data at a time and will be de-activated a few months after graduation.
Webpage
If you have a website on Studentweb that you would like to keep, you should save all your files. Free web space is available through Google Pages or Yahoo! Geocities if you would like to continue to keep an active website. Most Internet Service Providers also provide their customers with web space.
Student Education Discounts
As a student, you are able to get education discounts on a variety of software. After graduating, you will no longer be able to receive these discounts. These discounts are available through many stores, one of which is CompUtopia. They are located in the lounge in the basement of Davis Hall and open from 9:00 am through 4:00 pm. You can reach them at extension 1013.
Alumni Email Accounts
The Office of Instutional Advancement has partnered with alumniconnections.com to offer Providence College alumni "email for life" via the Providence College Alumni Online Community.
