General "HOW-TO" Security Information

Back to school checklist for new and returning computers from the holiday break.

  • Make sure you have anti-virus software installed.
  • Make sure you have anti-spyware software installed.
  • Make sure your computer is set to download and install the Microsoft Windows updates automatically.
  • Make sure the Microsoft Windows Firewall is installed and running.

How to setup your wireless router (even though it is not officially supported).

  • Plug the WAN port of the router into the provided port on the wall. This allows the router to connect to the campus network.
  • Plug the LAN ports of the router into the ethernet port of any wired network devices that need to connect to the campus network.
  • Login to your router via the manufacturers documentation to the setup page.
  • Make sure the WAN port is configured for DHCP which it should be by default already.
  • Secure your wireless router!!! Enable encryption and disable the broadcast of your SSID.
  • Also make sure to secure your wireless router's login page by changing the default password you used to originally connect to it.
